Iceland: Day 2 - Golden Circle Tour

12:45pm
Brian, Stien and I are sitting on a tour bus waiting to go on a tour of the Golden Circle. More on that later.

2:19pm
Just stopped at Þingvellir National Park. Iceland is split upon the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and this park is situated on the continental drift between the two. Huge fault lines from earthquakes caused from the two plates run right through the park. Really cool. The park is also home to Iceland’s largest and coldest lake. The combination of these two things make for some awesome views.

2:26pm
Almost just left a Brit at the park and after we stopped to let him on, the bus driver drove a quarter of a mile with the back door wide open.

4:10pm
Just left the Gullfoss waterfall. It was very windy and chilly, but the views were spectacularly awesome.

We got back to town from the bus tour around 7pm and they dropped us off at the city center. It had started to drizzle at this point, but it wasn’t so bad that we weren’t comfortable walking around. First things first, we stopped at Arctic Adventures, the outfit we used to organize our horseback riding adventure well be going on tomorrow, to discuss whether or not it’d be worth going if it was rainy. The desk where we talked to the very helpful women had a cool padded bench to sit on. One of the girls made me coffee. It was delicious and I made sure she knew it. Turns out it was her birthday. From there we continued down the drag hoping to find an ATM as we had all run out of cash and needed to reup. Upon finding one, we also found an amazing candy store, which we obviously stopped in and donated a lot of money to our cavity cause.

We walked around looking for a suitable dinner and ended up settling on Snaps which was a place we had discussed going to already so it made sense. I ordered their roast beef hash which consisted of roast beef, beets and potatoes topped with a fried egg and a large side of bernaise sauce. It was pretty tasty and very hearty. I would suggest coming here if you make it to Reykjavik as it’s very nice, not terribly expensive and apparently the food quality is pretty consistent. We’ve noticed that a lot of places here offer free wifi and we have definitely been taking advantage of this since the place we are staying at doesn’t have it set up yet. This allowed Brian and I to catch up with everything trip related as we waited for dinner.

After our awesome dinner, we went back to the main drag area and went to another little coffee shop, Kaffitár which I later found out is Reykjavik’s answer to Starbucks. We stayed there til around 10pm and continued using the interwebs. We all got coffees of some sort or another and just lounged. All in all, it was a very great day.
