Zanzibar: Day 3

Well, this may be getting old, but today was awesome again. I am slightly red at the moment, but am sitting naked in a towel on my balcony overlooking the sunset and the Indian ocean. Baller.

After a 6:30am wake up to a bird convention outside and a 8:00am bungalow snatch, we met Brian and Natalia for breakfast. Same 5 egg options we had yesterday and choice of instant coffee or passion fruit juice and a plate of fruit. Tis alright. Nothing special after the amazing Sopa lodges.

Following breakfast, T and I walked north for a bit passed some huge Italian resorts that apparently have taken over Nungwi the past few years. Coincidentally, there are a lot of Italians here. Even most of the beach hustlers know Italian. On the walk we scavenged all types of interesting sea shells, crabs, and other random sea things. We walked until we hit this huge restaurant on a pier at one of the resorts and decided to turn around as to not get cut off by the incoming tide. We showed Brian and Natalia our shell collection which REALLY impressed them. Maybe if we were five.

Following a nice little nap in the sun, T and I called over one of the beach sunglasses dealers and bought 5 pairs. Not sure why, but we got some cool white knock off Ray Bans and some stunners. We again had lunch at Kendwa Rocks. Today was pizza day and we got hot chilis on our pizzas. These were pretty spanking hot. After piece five, my nose was running so badly it reactivated a nose bleed I had gotten the day before. This didn’t stop me from eating my pizza. The pizza went down pretty well with some cold Castles (a beer from South Africa) and fresh sun rays.

Although most swim teachers and camp counselors advise waiting 30 minutes to swim after eating, we went right in and proceeded to board the dhow that was anchored 20 feet off shore and started jumping off the second level. This will most likely be something we do again. God the water was awesome. T also discovered her obsession with my camera and took about 200 photos of me looking ridiculous in the sand and doing my best Daniel Criag Bond impression of when he’s walking out of the water in Casino Royale.

At this point I was starting to look like a British Red Coat even with no shirt on. So I went to the bungalow and smartly passed out and woke up an hour later even more red before. No worries however. I turn red into black baby. As I woke up to the surprise of T’s dripping wet carcass, she pointed out some exciting events down the beach where a bunch of Muslim women were filling buckets of minnows and their kids were playing in the water, fully clothed. We walked down and I took a bunch of pictures. The colors of the clothing of these women popped so vividly on the beach setting. It was a joy to shoot.

As this dispersed, we followed two of the little boys back to our bungalow and chilled until we had some farewell cocktails at the bar with Brian and Natalia. We had two rounds and I discovered a great desert drink called home sweet home which tasted like a banana split with kahlua.

Something awesome about the bar here is that they are always playing some kind of football (soccer) match on the tv they have and there is a lot of lounging area including many hammocks.

Brian and Natalia left for the airport shortly afterwards and we applied aloe to our sun touched bodies watched an episode of Breaking Bad and then got ready for dinner.

We ate dinner late around 9:30pm at the Kendwa Rocks restaurant again. We both got pizzas, but the menu offered the option of having it cooked folded in half like a calzone so that’s what I did. As I suspected, they charged more and I got less substance. While sitting on our couch at the table, we marveled at the bonfire to the left, the ocean to the right, the sand beneath our feet and the clear sky full of stars above. (here’s a bucket for the vomit you might omit because of the cheese in that previous sentence). Per usual, I ended up having a quarter of T’s meal as well. The food is good at Kendwa Rocks and I’d suggest it. They even have wifi available for the beach.
